Helen Joyce (Abbott) Schmidt joined her Lord and Savior on Monday, June 30, 2014. She was born on Christmas Day of 1934. Helen was born on the family farm in Colorado, the youngest of eight children born to Allen and Opal (Cowel) Abbott. She loved telling people that her Dad shot the stork after the seventh child was born, so Santa Claus had to bring her.

She lived in the Keenesburg area and graduated from Brighton High School in 1952, she then moved to Denver to attend Colorado Women’s College. She remained in Denver until she met her husband, Ray Schmidt.

Ray and Helen eloped to Raton, N.M. on July 7, 1956. They continued to live in Colorado, where their three children were born. In 1966 Ray and Helen took their family and moved to Buffalo, Wyo. where they lived until 1977. They then moved to Casper, Wyo. and lived until 1985. In February of that year they moved to a warmer climate and settled in Fountain Hills.

Helen was active with golf and bowling while living there. In 2002 Ray and Helen moved to Mesa where they lived until her death.

Helen loved children, if there was one anywhere around she was talking or playing with them. She loved when she could babysit for her Godchildren or her grandchildren. They brought such joy to her life.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents Allen and Opal; four brothers, Herbert, Virl, Gean, and Gilbert; two sisters, Beverly Bodine and Hazel Cronk, three brothers-in-law, William Uhrich, Russell Cronk, and Forrest Schmidt; one sister-in-law, Doris McCune Abbott; one infant niece, Cindy Cronk, and one infant nephew, Robert Schmidt.

Helen is survived by her husband, Ray, of 58 years; a son Scot Schmidt of Coolidge; two daughters, Terri Schmidt of Fountain Hills and Robin (Fred) Lueck of Gilbert; four grandchildren, Ryan Anderson of Encinitas, Calif., Kacy Schmidt of Scottsdale, Rikki Lueck of Laramie, Wyo., and Dalton Lueck of Gilbert; one sister, Shirley Uhrich of Loveland, Colo.; four sisters-in-law, Georgene Abbott of Keenesburg, Colo., Sally Abbott of Brighton, Colo., Jane Abbott of Kiowa, Colo. and Jeanne Schmidt of Fort Lupton, Colo.; numerous nieces and nephews; two Godchildren, Jason Drake of Johnson City, Tenn. and Katie Keele of Franklin, Tenn.

A celebration of Helen’s life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. for family and friends at the Fountain Hills Presbyterian church. There will be a light luncheon following the service.

Memorials can be sent to the Helen Schmidt Memorial c/o Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, 13001 N Fountain Hills Blvd., Fountain Hills, AZ 85268.
