Student struck by truck near high school dies

Brighton High School student Lesly Rodriguez-Campos passed away around 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Children's Hospital in Broomfield after being struck by a truck driven by another student last week, according to officials.

Roses have been placed at the foot of the new stop sign at Ninth Avenue and Egbert Street, the site of the fatal car accident that killed BHS student Lesly Rodriguez-Campos.

Rodriguez-Campos' cause of death was not publicly released. She previously had been listed in critical but stable condition at the hospital, according to a school spokeswoman. Her friend Osmar Chacon started a GoFundMe campaign Wednesday night to help Rodriguez-Campos family. On the GoFundMe page, Chacon says Rodriguez-Campos suffered a severe brain injury and was on life support for the past week. The campaign raised more than $3,000 in less than a day.

A 17-year-old BHS student drove the truck near the high school on Ninth Avenue and Egbert Street where Rodriguez was hit around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, police said. He has not been charged, and his name has not been released.
Police determined that the pedestrian - Rodriguez - failed to yield when crossing Egbert Street before the truck struck her as it was headed eastbound. Police said she had bent down to pick something up before walking into the crosswalk, according to police spokesman John Bradley.

City officials have installed two new stops signs at the intersection with flags and lights. The city will be studying traffic and safety around all schools, according to City Manager Philip Rodriguez. Community members have put roses near one of the new stop signs.

Police will talk to representatives at the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office again to determine what charges, if any, will be brought against the driver, Bradley said.
