Kathryn Adair “Kate” McVeigh
Kathryn Adair “Kate” McVeigh, former resident of Mackinac Island, passed away Friday, January 6, 2012, at her home in Palm Springs, California.
She was born 1931, in Brighton, Colorado, and moved to Michigan as a teenager.
Kate graduated summa cum laude from Michigan State University and, after teaching High School English, started a career in marketing and sales, working for the St. Regis Hotel in Detroit and Westin Hotels chain.
In 1965, her family began spending summers on Mackinac Island and eventually purchased (and named) Brigadoon Cottage. During the next twenty-four years, the porch of Brigadoon Cottage was a lively gathering place for friends and family.
Her love for Mackinac brought her to the Mackinac Island State Park Commission, where, as P.R. Director, she spearheaded the creation of Mackinac Associates as well as many other innovative events and initiatives. She also worked in convention sales at the Mission Point and later was a successful real estate agent on the Island.
She eventually moved to Harbor Springs, and then Palm Springs to be closer to her family.
Kate is survived by her four children, Greg (Palm Springs, CA), Scott (Cary, NC), Amy (Shanghai, China) and Dave (Cebu, Philippines), ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren, as well as her beloved brother Don.
A memorial gathering will be held this summer on the island.
Donations can be made in honor of Kate McVeigh to Mackinac Associates (www.mackinac parks.com/ mackinac-associates).
My candle burns at both ends
It will not last the night;
But ah, my foes, and oh,
my friends –
It gives a lovely light.
