Lathan Eggleston
At the age of 100, long-time Boulder resident, Lathan Eggleston, died peacefully on February 11, 2008 at Life Care Center of Evergreen.
The son of Charles Davis Eggleston and Bertha Louise Myers Eggleston, Lathan was born on August 28, 1907 on Jones' ranch in Superior, Colorado. With the exception of two years (1909-1911), Lathan spent his entire life in Colorado. Lathan graduated from Brighton High School and attended the University of Colorado.
Lathan met Dorothy Maxine Hunter when she was a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in Adena, Colorado and they were married on December 24th, 1931. They had four children, Ronald Lee (1933), Charles Rex (1935), David Miles (1939), and Diane Louise (1942).
Prior to WWII, Lathan was employed at Western Cutlery. During the war, he worked for Remington Arms and after the war he returned to Western Cutlery for two years. He then became a self-employed carpenter and built and remodeled many homes around Boulder. Later in his working life he was a master cabinet-maker and will be remembered for designing and building many grandfather clocks and water skis. Beginning in the early 1960s, Lathan was a fixture at the Boulder Reservoir as an avid water skier (skiing well into his 60s), and then he became a fixture at Haystack Golf Course well into his 80s. In the latter years of his life, he enjoyed storytelling and building birdhouses with his son-in-law, Jim Talcott.
Lathan was preceded in death by his sisters, Stella and Nell, his two sons, David and Ron, and his beloved wife, Dorothy Hunter Eggleston, who died in 2003.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Rex and Connie Eggleston; his daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Jim Talcott; his daughters-in-law, Arlene Barr and Linda Eggleston; eight grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in the spring in Boulder at Mountain View Memorial Park.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
