A 38-year-old man was struck and killed by a Union Pacific freight train early Sunday in Brighton, becoming the third victim in less than three weeks to die in collisions with trains in the Denver area.
Police identified the latest victim as David Wayne Anderson of Brighton. He was dead on arrival at Platte Valley Medical Center shortly after the 1:52 a.m. accident.
The three-man crew aboard the southbound Union Pacific freight told officials they saw Anderson lying across the track at Egbert Street near U.S. 85 but were unable to stop the train in time, said Union Pacific spokesman Ed Trandahl.
Police could not say why Anderson was lying on the track. The case is still under investigation.
"It's too bad," Trandahl said. "Why he was there, we don't know."
Earlier, two men were killed within five days of each other in collisions with trains despite flashing lights and bells at the crossing at East 88th Avenue and Colorado 2 in Commerce City.
At 10:20 p.m. March 2, Stephen Douglas Simkins, 45, of Thornton stopped at the crossing in his Ford LTD, then proceeded into the path of a Burlington Northern freight.
Tom L. Record Sr. of Wyoming was killed at the crossing Feb. 27 when he drove his oil tanker into the path of an Amtrak train.
