CASHTON — Dennis Ray Letterly, 69, of rural Cashton died Friday, May 11, 2018, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse.
Dennis was born March 2, 1949, in Denver, to Elmer and Ruth (Witte) Letterly. He grew up on a farm near Brighton, Colo., and graduated from Brighton High School in 1967.
He married Janet Lane June 26, 1971. Two sons, Steve and Ryan, were born there in Colorado; then in 1977, the family moved to Wisconsin, near Liberty Pole, where the third son, Randy, was born. After a couple of years they moved to Rognstad Ridge, where they milked cows and raised their family and Dennis hunted deer to add to the household meat supply. After selling the cows, he worked for Webster Lumber in Westby, for 13 years and then seven years at Multi-Stak in Sparta, before retiring in early 2015.
Through the years, Dennis was very active in his church. He loved to cook and he raised a garden for many years and did a lot of canning, including pickles, because all Letterlys have to have pickles. He also liked sharing his garden bounty with the food pantry. In retirement, he enjoyed cutting and selling firewood, going fishing, playing euchre three times a week and traveling the country with Jan. Often this included visiting her friends and relatives that he didn’t know, but being a “people person,” he was always a good sport and made new friends wherever they went. Most of all he enjoyed and adored his grandchildren and was a wonderful Grandpa to them.
Dennis is survived by his wife of nearly 47 years, Janet; three sons, Steve (Andrea) of Monument, Colo., Ryan of Cashton and Randy of Westby; four grandchildren, Kenneth and Alison, Cashton, and Luke and Elizabeth, Colorado; one brother, Allen (Penny) of Eaton, Colo.; three sisters, Peggy (Fred) Gunnerson of Ririe, Idaho, Karen (Pat) Adle of Collinsville, Ill., and MaryAnn (Jerry) Sundby of Castle Rock, Colo.; one sister-in-law, Delene Hart of Viroqua; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a nephew, Chris Baskinski.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 17, at Skogdalen Lutheran Church with the Rev. Gary Daines officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Vosseteig Funeral Home in Westby and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be at the Bethesda Lutheran Brethren Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Bethel Butikk or the charity of donor’s choice.
The Vosseteig Funeral Home of Westby is serving the family.
