Doris Evelyn Durdy (1925 - 2016)
Doris Evelyn (Meehl) Durdy (McEvoy), at 91 years of age, passed away Dec. 16 in her sleep in Centennial.
Doris was born in Denver Sept. 20, 1925, to Paul and Louise (Wall) Meehl. Her siblings were Salome (Sally) (Meehl) Struck, Paul Meehl and Louie Meehl. Doris' childhood was spent on the family farm in Brighton.
She attended Zion Lutheran Elementary School, graduated from Brighton High School and obtained a supervisory management development certificate from the University of Colorado.
Doris married to William (Bill) Durdy in 1949 in Brighton, and they had four children – Stephanie Kay, Leslie Warren, Steven Paul and Paula Sue. She was a long-time employee of more than 30 years with the then-Mountain Bell Telephone Co. The company designated her as the loan executive for several of the Mile High United Way Campaigns.
Doris was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Women's Auxiliary for the volunteer fire department both in Brighton. Her volunteer activities included a 4-H leader, Cub Scout den mother and secretary of sunday school.
Doris also obtained a real estate license. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women, International Toastmistress Club, Telephone Pioneers of America and Zonta Club.
Doris embarked on the political scene when she was elected to the Brighton City Council in 1973, where she served for 10 years, eight of those years as mayor pro-tem. She was on several committees and served the following organizations: Adams County YMCA Board; Colorado Municipal League; Colorado Republican Party, vice chairman; Denver Chamber of Commerce; Denver Regional Council of Governments; National League of Cities; Republican National Committee; White House Intergovernmental Affairs Office; and the Women's Political Caucus of Colorado. She was a candidate for the Colorado State Legislature for District 30 in both 1978 and 1982.
Doris joined Ports of Call and spent the winters in Sun City, Ariz., enjoying many activities, especially travel and golf, after she retired from Mountain Bell and politics in 1983. She married Doug McEvoy in 1999 in Aurora. She added his four daughters – Pamela Berry, Bonnie Hay, Lynn Hansen and Kimberly Cordova –along with their families to her family.
Survivors include a daughter, Stephanie Albrecht, of Centennial; granddaughter Kelly Helm, of Colorado Springs; her husband, Brandon; great-grandchildren, Macy and Max; son Leslie Durdy and his wife, Kathy, of Greeley; a grandson, Andrew (Drew); Stephen Durdy's wife, Barbara, of Killingworth, Conn.; her daughter Katherine (Kaity) Durdy, of Cody, Wyo.; daughter, Paula Dennis, of Englewood; her husband, Loren; their children, Hesper Dentry, of Peetz; Melissa Solomon and family, of Pennsylvania; grandson, Dalton, of Denver; his wife Chelsey; sister-in-law Eileen Meehl, of Brighton; daughters of Doug McEvoy (husband), Pamela Berry, of Idaho; her husband, Kevin; daughter Bonnie Hay and her husband, David, of Parker; a daughter, Lynn Hansen, and her husband, Gary, of Aurora; a daughter, Kimberly Cordova, and her husband, Joseph, of Aurora; their extended families; plus numerous nieces and nephews and their families of the Meehl and Durdy families.
Her husbands, William (Bill) Durdy and Doug McEvoy; son, Steven Durdy; a sister, Sally Struck; brother-in-law Walter Struck; her brothers, Paul and Louie Meehl; a sister-in-law, Vi Meehl; her father and mother; father-in-law Roscoe Durdy; mother-in-law Katherine Durdy; and brothers-in-law Richard and James (Jim) Durdy, preceded her in death.
