Grundy Neil Karnes
U.S. veteran and hometown boy Grundy Neil Karnes, 78, born Feb. 23, 1932, the son of Rane and Opal Karnes. He was a graduate of Brighton High School, attended the University of Colorado and served in the Navy as a medic. He and his wife moved to Grand Junction in 1977. They opened and operated a Floor Covering Store. Other interests included buying and restoring older properties, exploring the world, scuba diving and cycling. In 1997, he and his wife moved to Rome, Ga., where he continued his passion for restoring older properties, traveling and cycling. He rode thousands of miles on his bicycle. Riding across many of the southern states as well as Alaska, Canada and New Zealand. Then, Jan. 18, 2011, he took his final journey to ride his bicycle on a higher plain.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one daughter, Karen.
Survivors include his wife, Dawn Karnes, of Armuchee, Ga., two sisters, Mary Joe Woodward, of Brighton, and Peggy Jones (Bob), of Los Altos, Calif.; five children, Rene Gordon (Jeff), of Phoenix, Ariz., Debbie Rivera (Carlos), of Peoria, Ariz., Leanne Koppes, of Glendale, Ariz., Gregg Karnes (Carol), of Silver Creek, Ga., and Cindy Landing (Sean), of Valdosta, Ga.; 13 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and many loving, devoted friends.
A life celebration was Jan. 22 at his home. Join family and friends for food and memory sharing at noon, May 28, at the Brighton Senior Center, 575 Bush St., Brighton.
