U.S. veteran Harley Thaden, 86 of Brighton, died June 20, 2009.
He was born Nov. 1, 1922, to Fred and Gladys (Swartz) Thaden on the family homestead in Strasburg. They moved to Brighton in 1935, where he attended Brighton schools until enlisting in the Navy in 1942. He received his basic training in San Diego, Calif. He then attended the University of Missouri and studied diesel engine mechanics. After graduation, he was assigned to a mine sweeper in the South Pacific. Later he operated the powerhouse at the Naval Base on Oahu, Hawaii until his discharge in 1946.
He married Mildred Zeiler May 4, 1947, at Zion Lutheran Church in Brighton. They were blessed with four sons. Harley had many careers, starting at the Brighton Hatchery, moving on to housing construction. He also worked for period of time at a dairy. In 1965, he went to work for Power Motive Corp. in Denver where he worked for 24 years before retiring.
Survivors include his sons, John (Patti), David (Jane) and Doug (Joyce); and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Gary; brother, Robert and his sister, Arlyne, of Utah, who died within hours of Harley's death.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., June 26, at Tabor-Rice Funeral Home in Brighton. A memorial service is at 11 a.m., June 27, at Zion Lutheran Church, 1400 S. Skeel St., Brighton.
