Sean Kennedy and Steve Smith
Jesse James Watson and Gregory Jase “P’nut” Watson, of Brighton, died Monday, June 4, after a car crash. They were part of a family trip.
The Colorado State Patrol said their car crashed while driving eastbound on Interstate 76 near Sterling. The vehicle, being driven by Jacey Walker, 35, of Brighton veered north onto the left shoulder of the road and began to spin.
Attempting to re-enter the highway, the car rolled over off the right shoulder of the road to the south, throwing both Watson boys from the vehicle. Jesse was declared dead on scene, and Gregory passed away from his injuries while being transported to Sterling Regional Medical Center. Walker and another occupant in the car, a 16-year-old female sustained minor injuries. Alcohol is being investigated as a potential contributing factor to the crash.
Jesse Watson would have turned 15 next month. He was a student at Brighton High School and was on the school’s freshman football team.
“He played offensive and defensive line for us last year,” BHS coach Casey Pelton said. “He had been with us at practice and in the weight room in the week prior to the accident.”
Gregory Jase Watson was 8 years old. He spent his time playing Little League football and numerous video games. He was a student at Southeast Elementary School and was to begin third grade in the fall.
“Jesse and P’nut were always together and looking out for one another, just as brothers do. Even there at the end, they needed each other,” according to an obituary notice.
“The entire Brighton High School program is devastated by the loss of Jesse and his little brother, Gregory,” Pelton said
.
Survivors include their parents, Jacey and Gregory Watson; and a sister, Jondra. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 16, at Harvest Fellowship, 11401 E. 160th Ave., Brighton.
