Brighton man dies in crash with car authorities believe was stolen
A Brighton man died Thursday morning after a traffic crash in southern Weld County. Colorado State Patrol troopers believe a car involved in the crash was stolen.
According to a news release from the Weld County coroner’s office, just before 7 a.m. Kirk Houston, 48, was driving a 1970 Chevrolet pickup south on Weld County Road 45, about 35 miles south of Greeley.
The stolen 2003 station wagon was driving north on Weld 45, according to a news release from the Colorado State Patrol, and the driver lost control of the car, crashing into Houston’s truck between Weld County Roads 4 and 8.
According to the release from the coroner’s office, Houston was pronounced dead when first responders arrived on the scene, just after 7:15 a.m.
Colorado State Patrol troopers believe the driver of the stolen car had hitched a ride with a passing motorist to or from a Love’s gas station in Hudson before the crash, according to the release.
They also believe he received another ride away from the scene with a passing driver.
The same release said the crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information about the crash can reach the Colorado State Patrol at 303-239-4501.
