Hiker found dead in park
HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK - Authorities are trying to determine the cause of death of a hiker who was found lying on a coastal lava flow.
Three hikers came upon Kirk A. Kiyota , 43, of Brighton, Colo., a mile past the end of Chain of Craters Road about 7 p.m. Saturday, a National Park Service statement said.
The hikers alerted a park ranger stationed at the end of the road, and the ranger hiked out to Kiyota and found he was not breathing and had no pulse.
The ranger performed CPR with the help of several visitors and three other rangers who arrived within 45 minutes. Kiyota was pronounced dead after rangers tried for more than an hour to resuscitate him, the park service said. His body was taken by county helicopter and ambulance to Hilo Medical Center.
It was not known how far Kiyota had hiked before he collapsed, rangers said. He was carrying a small pack and a large, empty water container, they said.
