On February 14, 2009, surrounded by family, Louise Kyoko Ota passed away peacefully at home. Born July 28, 1933 in San Pedro, California, she was the daughter of the late Kiyoshi and Harumi Yanagihara. She was the only girl and second born of five children.
At the young age of eight, she was affected by the Japanese Internment. Her family spent time at Santa Anita and later chose to move to Colorado. She was a graduate of Colorado University with a BA in Nursing.
On September 29, 1957 she married Samuel Isamu Ota. Together they had four children, Kathy, Raine, Kip and Chris.
For nearly 30 years, Louise was a nurse at Peninsula Hospital in Med-Surg and Telemetry. She was an enthusiastic and avid bowler for 35 plus years with the Peninsula Nikkei Association. Once retired, she cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed her various crafts, Japanese Brush Painting, Ceramics, Dollmaking, and Quilting. She was a member of Sturge Presbyterian Church for 45 years. She held the position of Deacon and Elder and she also led hospitality with the women's group. Through the Japanese Community Center she was on rotation to take senior blood pressure readings. She continued to use her nursing skills and knowledge to help family and friends, often going above and beyond.
She is survived by her son, Chris Ota of Belmont; son and daughter-in-law, Kip and Maya Ota of San Mateo and their children, Matthew, Curtis and Kaley; daughter and son-in-law, Raine and Alan Oiwa of San Mateo and their children, Genki and Nanami; daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Karl Chan of Sacramento and their children, Kyle, Alicia and Sara; brother and sister-in-law, Danny and Jane Yanagihara of Oxnard and their children, Russell and Leslie; brother, Paul Yanagihara of Oxnard; as well as additional nieces and nephews.
Louise was preceded in death by her husband Sam, parents Kiyoshi and Harumi Yanagihara and brothers Henry and Larry Yanagihara.
A Memorial Service will be held at Sturge Presbyterian Church, 25 South Humboldt Street, San Mateo, California 94401 on Thursday, February 26 at 6:00 pm. Casual attire. Sneider & Sullivan Funeral Home 650-343-1804
