Lynn Edward “Clem” Howerton, Sr. of Mitchell, Ore., passed away Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010 at his home in Mitchell, Ore. Lynn was born on July 2, 1937, in Fort Collins, Colo. to James William and Loree Marie (Coleman) Howerton. He graduated from Fort Collins High School in 1955 and went into the Navy a year later. He was assigned to the Construction Battalion. After serving, Lynncompleted an apprenticeship program to become a Journeyman Lineman in Portland, Ore. through the IBEW 125.
He married Joyce Marie Kidder and together they had three children. In the early years the family traveled together as Lynn’s crew put up the major steel electrical towers through out the northwest. Known as the “Climbing Troubadour” Lynn and his band played local clubs on the weekends. He was a talented musician and song writer.
Lynn is survived by his former wife, Joyce Kidder; son, Lynn Howerton, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Kim Howerton; his daughter, Valoree Vernau Gavin and husband Bob Gavin; his sisters and brother-in-laws, Ruby and Wendell Shields of Lander, Wyo., Velma Krumbick, of Fort Collins, Colo., Verna and William Molenda of Darby, Mont., Joyce Anderson of Missoula, Mont., and Virginia and Dwight Bristol of Springfield, Ore.; and his grandchildren and numerous other family members and friends.
Lynn was preceded in death by his daughter, Carla Jo Howerton.
A memorial graveside service with military honors, will be held Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010 1 p.m. at the Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt. Scott Boulevard Portland, OR 97086-6937. Prineville Funeral Home was in care of the cremation.
