Alma Man Gets Heavy Sentence for Beating Death of His Wife
November 22, 2004
A 33-year-old Orleans man has been sentenced to 19 to 20 years in prison for the death of his wife.
James Covey was sentenced earlier this month in Harlan County Court for his manslaughter conviction.
Covey has already served more than three years in jail. He will be eligible for parole in nine and a half years.
He originally was charged with first-degree murder and a weapons count in the beating death of 30-year-old Starlet Covey. Her body was found Sept. 10, 2001, in the couple's home.
Covey's trial was moved to Adams County after a court deemed he could not receive a fair trial in Harlan County.
Harlan County Deputy Attorney Brian McQuay had asked for and nearly received the maximum sentence for Covey. McQuay noted that the autopsy doctor called the case the worse physical beating he had seen in his career.
