U.S. veteran Wayne Heitschmidt , 74, of Fort Morgan, passed away early June 20, 2010, after a short illness at the North Colorado Medical Center inpatient hospice unit.
He was born June 16, 1936, in Great Bend, Kan., to Walter and Verna Joeken. The Heitschmidt family bought a farm near Brighton in January 1951. In 1954, Wayne graduated from Brighton High School and then served in the U.S. Army for three years. On Dec. 21, 1963, Wayne married Marian Holt. They started their family and moved to Fort Morgan in 1974, where they started a dairy farm operation. Later, Wayne went to work for Western Sugar Co. where he worked for 13 years, working campaign and as a night watchman. He never missed a day of work during 13 years with Western Sugar Co. Wayne’s interests were his family, farming, bowling, watching sports on television and entertainment trips to Central City. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Marian, of Fort Morgan, two sons, Keven, of Vancouver, Wash., and Brian, of Fort Morgan, two brothers, Allen, of Brighton, and Edwin Bunnell, of Florida; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service is at 10:30 a.m., June 23, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Morgan. The service will conclude at the church. Cremation arrangements were entrusted to Heer & Dahl Mortuaries & Crematory.
